Do you ever have one of those days when you ask yourself “why do I bust my butt, nobody really notices or appreciates it anyway?” Tell me I’m not alone, please!
Being a wife and a mom, whether you work in or out of the home, is one of the hardest jobs in the world, the rewards are great, but it’s a lot of work. There is so much to do, remember and keep organized that it can get a bit overwhelming at times. But the worst part is how we beat ourselves up when we fall short of our long list of responsibilities.
Take clean teeth for instance. Last week, I was cleaning the toothbrush holder in the bathroom and realized that it had been awhile since I changed out the toothbrushes. It’s not that I had to go to the store to get them, I had a huge stockpile in the linen closet, it’s that I simply forgot to do it. It sounds a little silly now, but that simple little oversight on my part caused me to question my ability as a wife and mother. I felt like I was falling short of providing basic oral hygiene to my family.
When I was finally done attending my pity party, the logical part of my brain kicked in. I pride myself on always finding “Creativity Inspired by Frustration” so I put on my Fluster Buster thinking cap to come up with a solution, after changing out the toothbrushes.
I have, what I like to call my Reminder Binder, it’s part of my Home Organization system. In it I’ve included an events calendar for each month of the year. On the events calendar, I list everything that reoccurs every year, such as birthdays and anniversaries. To solve my problem, I decided to add changing out toothbrushes to the calendar. Dentists say that you should change out your toothbrush every 3 months, so I listed it on my February, May, August and November event calendars. I don’t think it’ll be a problem again.
Another tip that will help avoid forgetting, is to keep a supply of toothbrushes on hand. Toothbrushes can get a little expensive so I like to pick them up when they go on sale. Some of the best deals I’ve found on toothbrushes, often free, have been at Rite Aid. Rite Aid always has great sales on toothbrushes and when you pair the sale with a Rite Aid coupon and a manufacturers coupon you can pick up toothbrushes for next to nothing, if not free.
