Homemade Hamburger & Hot Dog Buns. Nothing smells better than fresh baked bread. Surprisingly making the buns yourself is both cheap and easy, a lot easier to do than you might think. Most of your time is spent waiting for them to rise. If you’ve never tried making them yourself, give it a try your taste buds will thank you for it. #cheaprecipes #breadrecipe
If you’re looking to get dinner on the table quickly than I would suggest buying hamburger and hot dog buns already made. Buns can be purchased pretty inexpensively, especially if you purchase the store brand.
Now, if you’re looking to add some excitement to your meal and you have a little time to spare, than homemade is the only way to go. Both your nose and your taste buds will thank you for the extra effort.
As for the cost of making buns yourself, it costs me around $0.85 to make 8 buns.. It’s not much of a savings when I can purchase the store brand version for around $1.00 for 8. However, when I do have the time I much prefer to make them myself. Not only do they taste better but I have the peace of mind in knowing exactly what I’m putting in my families bellies.
Oh, and don’t forget the wonderful smell that fills your home when you bake bread, priceless!
Homemade Hamburger & Hot Dog Buns
Yields: 8 | Category: Make Don’t Buy | Author: Robin Buster
· 1 package active dry yeast
· 3 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
· 1 cup warm water
· 2 eggs
· 3 tablespoons butter, melted
· 2 tablespoons sugar
· 1 teaspoon salt
· Sesame seeds (optional)
Instructions
1. In the bowl of a stand mixer mix together yeast, ½ cup flour and water. Once mixed let it sit for 10-15 minutes, it should look foamy after it sits.
2. Whisk 1 egg, butter, sugar and salt into the yeast mixture. Add the remaining flour. Using the dough hook, mix the ingredients together on low for 3-4 minutes. Check the dough to make sure it’s not to sticky. Lightly touch the dough with a rubber spatula, if the dough sticks to it, it is to sticky and you should add a little more flour. The dough should be sticky but not stick to the spatula. Continue kneading the dough for an additional 2-3 minutes.
3. Transfer dough to a lightly floured surface, form into a large ball. Lightly coat the dough with oil, cover and let it rise for 2 hours.
4. Knock out the air and place on a lightly floured surface. Form the dough into a rectangle cut into 8 equal pieces. Form hamburger buns into round disk shapes and hot dog buns into oblong shapes. Place dough on a parchment lined baking sheet, lightly dust with flour and drape the pan with plastic wrap. Let rise for 1 hour.
5. Preheat oven to 375°. Whisk the remaining egg in a small bowl. Using a pastry brush very lightly brush the tops of the buns with the egg wash. Sprinkle with sesame seeds.
6. Bake for 15-18 minutes. Let cool completely before tearing apart.
