33 Useful Things You Can Do With Epsom Salt

Epsom Salt is traditionally used to soothe aches and pains and to relieve stress. However, there are a number of nontraditional uses that are guaranteed to make life a bit easier and help you live frugally.

I love common household products that can be used in unexpected ways. Buying a product that can be used in a variety of different ways is one of the best ways I know to live frugally. 

Epsom Salt, is that what’s in my fragrant bath salts that I got for Christmas? Here I thought that it was just to make my bath water smell pretty. Why didn’t anyone tell me that Epsom Salt has a lot of healing properties. If I had known this I would have used my Christmas present instead of just displaying it because it looked pretty. Thanks to my family I’m now informed with a huge list of frugal living tips using Epsom Salt.

Arthritis – to prevent joint tightening, soak in a hot bath with 2 cups Epsom Salt for at least 15 minutes. After drying off move the joints as much as possible.

Bronchial Asthma – to ease tightness, soak in a hot bath with 2 cups of dissolved Epsom Salt.

Bruises – to reduce swelling, add 2 cups of Epsom salt to warm bath and soak.

Detox – to eliminate toxins, soak in a hot bath with 2 cups of dissolved Epsom Salt once a week for 10 minutes.

Energy – to increase, soak in a hot bath with 2 cups of dissolved Epsom Salt.

Episiotomy – to reduce soreness, apply a thick paste made with Epsom Salt and hot water to the area.

Feet – to remove odors, soak feet in a large pan of warm water with a ½ cup of Epsom Salt. Rinse and dry.

Feet – to soften, soak feet in a large pan of warm water with a 1/2 cup of Epsom Salt. Rinse and dry.

Feet – to soothe, soak feet in a large pan of warm water with ½ cup of Epsom Salt. Rinse and dry.

Inflammation – to relieve, soak in a hot bath with 2 cups of dissolved Epsom Salt.

Migraines – to relieve pain, soak in a hot bath with 2 cups of dissolved Epsom Salt.

Muscles – to relieve pain, soak in a hot bath with 2 cups of dissolved Epsom Salt.

Sleep – for a better nights sleep, soak in a hot bath with 2 cups of dissolved Epsom Salt before going to bed.

Splinters – to remove, soak in Epsom salt to draw out the splinter

Sprains – to reduce swelling, add 2 cups of Epsom salt to a warm bath and soak.

Stress – to relieve, soak in a hot bath with 2 cups of dissolved Epsom Salt.

Sunburn – for relief, spritz skin with a mixture of 1 tablespoon Epsom Salt and 1 cup cool water.

Face – to clean, mix ½ teaspoon of Epsom salt with cleanser. Massage into skin and rinse with cold water.

Face Mask (normal to oily) – to make your own, mix 1 tablespoon of cognac, 1 egg, ¼ cup non-fat dry milk, 1 lemon (juiced), ½ teaspoon of Epsom salt.

Face Mask (normal to dry) – to make your own, mix ¼ cup grated carrot, 1 ½ teaspoons of mayonnaise and ½ teaspoon of Epsom Salt.

Hair – to remove hairspray build-up, mix together 1 cup Epsom Salt, 1 cup lemon juice and 1 gallon of water. Allow the mixture to sit overnight, than pour the mixture on your dry hair. Let it sit for 15-20 minutes, then shampoo.

Hair – to remove oil, add 1/4 cup Epsom Salt to 1/4 cup shampoo and massage mixture to dry hair. Rinse with apple cider vinegar. Leave on your hair for 5-10 minutes and then rinse.

Hair – to add texture, mix together 1 cup hot water, 2 tablespoons Epsom Salt, ½ teaspoon conditioner. Spray on the roots of dry hair and scrunch.

Hair – to add volume, heat ¼ cup conditioner and ¼ cup Epsom Salt in a sauce pan. Massage the warm mixture to your hair. Let the mixture sit on your hair for 15-20 minutes then rinse.

Skin – to exfoliate, massage Epsom salt over wet skin.

Skin – to moisturize, soak in a hot bath with 2 cups Epsom Salt and ½ cup olive oil for at least 15 minutes. Do not use soap.

Skin – to relieve itchiness, spritz skin with a mixture of 1 tablespoon Epsom Salt and 1 cup cool water.

Grout Cleaner – to make your own, mix equal parts Epsom Salt and dish soap. Scrub the grout and rinse clean.

House Plants – to boost growth, dissolve 2 tablespoons of Epsom Salt in a ½ gallon of water. Use the mixture to water your plants.

Tomatoes – to boost growth, add a tablespoon of Epsom Salt to the soil.

Roses – to boost growth, add 1 tablespoon of Epsom Salt to the soil weekly.

Slugs – to banish, sprinkle the area with Epsom Salt.

Soil – to restore magnesium levels, add Epsom Salt to the soil.

    This is a very impressive list, Robin ! My granny used to have boxes of this stuff, so I know quite a few of the above uses and they all work 🙂 Now, to try the rest of the list !

    I myself use Epsom Salts ALL the time! I soak in them nightly…part of my refreshing ritual 🙂

    I need a box right now! I was given some pretty homemade bath salts for Christmas and I used them all up. Every last grain! Can't wait to try it to clean my white grout.
