We’re getting close to the finish line for the Home Organization Challenge. Over the last few weeks we’ve learned the best way to de-clutter our homes, without getting overwhelmed. We’ve learned some things that we can do, daily, to make our days run a little smoother. We also created some weekly challenges to help us to stay on top of our huge list of responsibilities. For the remainder of the Home Organization Challenge we’re going to be working on detailed cleaning lists and creating revolving menus, which are both huge time savers.

Today’s Challenges: (don’t forget to celebrate)

  • Good Morning
  • Good Afternoon
  • Good Night
  • Tuesday’s Weekly Challenge (mine – Office Day)
  • 20/20 (de-cluttering)
Day 22 – Kitchen/Dining Room

Before I explain how the monthly challenges work, let’s begin creating our monthly detailed cleaning lists for the kitchen and dining room. Grab a piece of paper, a pen and take a seat in the middle of the kitchen. Starting at the ceiling, begin listing everything that needs to be cleaned and work your way down to the floor. When you’re done with the kitchen move into the dining room and do the same thing. Once you’ve completed your lists decide how often each item needs to be cleaned. Here’s a sample of what my kitchen and dining room lists look like:Kitchen

  • Remove cob webs (monthly)
  • Clean light fixtures (annually)
  • Clean HVAC vents (bi-annually)

Now that we’ve got that done, let’s discuss how this all works. I’ve divided my home into 5 different zones:
  • Kitchen and Dining Room (Week 1)
  • Bathroom(s) and Laundry Room (Week 2)
  • Living Room/Family Room and Entryway/Mudroom (Week 3)
  • Bedroom(s) and Office (Week 4)
  • Garage/Shed and Yard (Weekends/Week 5)
Each week I concentrate on just one zone. The first week of the month I work on my Kitchen/Dining Room zone. I spend about 30 minutes to an hour a day knocking things off of my detailed cleaning list. I start by addressing all of the monthly items, when those are finished, I work on a couple of the quarterly, bi-annual and annual items, being sure to check them off as I complete them. When week 1 rolls around again, I complete all of the monthly tasks and then work on the quarterly, bi-annul and annual items that I didn’t get to the previous month. The longer you are following the detailed cleaning, the less time it will take to complete the tasks. For example, when you clean your oven every month it won’t require as much elbow grease the following month to complete, so you’ll be able to bank a little time for the things that you really love to do.
