Simple Apple Pie Flautas Recipe – Tender apple slices and sweet cinnamon wrapped in a flour tortilla, fried to crispy perfection in an air fryer and then drizzled with a delicious homemade caramel sauce. Perfect to serve warm on a cold winter day or cold on a hot summer day, either way, delicious.

Do you remember the fried apple pies that McDonald’s use to have? They were the best, crispy, crunchy on the out the outside and bursting with warm apple goodness on the inside. They’ve since changed the recipe to a baked apple pie which doesn’t even come close to the deliciousness of the fried version. However, I think these homemade apple flautas give the original McDonald’s fried apple pies a run for their money. These apple flautas are filled with warm, cinnamon apples and they’re crispy like the original pies, but the flautas are cooked in an air fryer and not a vat of oil, which makes them a healthier version.
Apple Pie Fajitas
Flour Tortillas: I’ve used both packaged and homemade tortillas for this recipe. The packaged tortillas are great if you’re in a hurry, but if you’re looking for flavor, the homemade tortillas are by far the best. The homemade tortillas are a lot more tender, they have more flavor, they’re easier to work with and they aren’t as hard to make as you might think.
Apple Pie Filling: I’ve used both the canned and homemade apple pie fillings and while the canned version is easiest, the homemade apple pie filling is a lot better.
- ¾ cup light brown sugar
- ¼ cup all-purpose flour
- ¾ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- nutmeg to taste
- 7 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and sliced
- 1 lemon, juice and zest
- 12 (10-inch) flour tortillas
- vegetable oil
- toothpicks, if needed
- caramel sauce
- Cinnamon sugar (optional)
- Preheat air fryer for 2-3 minutes at 400°F.
- In a small bowl, mix together brown sugar, flour, cinnamon and nutmeg.
- In a large bowl, toss the apples with lemon juice, then add the sugar mixture and coat the apples.
- Warm tortilla, making it pliable, then place ½-3/4 cup of apples in the center of tortilla. Fold like a burrito and seal using a little water brushed on the edge. *Use toothpicks if needed.
- Lightly spray or brush the tortilla with oil.
- Place in air fryer, don't overcrowd the basket, seam side down and cook at 400°F for 6-7 minutes, turning once after 4 minutes.
- Drizzle with caramel sauce before serving.
**Optional - roll the hot apple flauta in cinnamon sugar before drizzling with caramel syrup

I will share this with my daughter who just got an air fryer. Found you on Grandma’s Briefs Blog Party.
These look so yummy and easy to make. I am going to make these tonight. Thank you for sharing at Dishing it and Digging it link party. You are one of this Sunday’s features.
I never had these at McDonald’s but I never went there very often. I keep seeing recipes using air fryers (besides the Insta-Pot) and wonder if I should buy them. I have collected so many appliances and gadgets for cooking that I keep saying “no more”. However… these sound so good and I love “anything apple”.
I absolutely love my Insta Pot and my air fryer and I do understand about having to many appliances/gadgets. I did recently see that the Ninja has made a pressure cooker that can also be used as an air fryer. https://amzn.to/2Dl6mWX
